The Void [Folklore]

Post  Chavvy on Mon Jul 30, 2012 5:42 am

[Not sure is this cases as non-fiction, as it is fiction written in a more informative style. If you disagree with the placement, just move it Mooblips]

The "Void" is known by very few, and usually those that discover this alternated plain of existence do not come back. But for what little is known of this mysterious place, a lot can be told.

The Void was first heard of in Mayan mythology. To them, it was known as a demon realm, down to it be inaccessible by mortal means. Only the creatures of the dimension can access it, and leave it respectively. The various mythological texts suggest that the void dimension was created alongside our own, a parallel universe that influence its inhabitance, as ours the world is influence by our own actions. It is saying that, which leads to it being believed that void is actually a living being, taking the lives of those that dwell upon it.

Stories tell of this place at various points in history, usually only in brief events, rather that huge changes to our dimension. Usually the stories are those of the Voids' creatures leaking through the plain rifts, and being quickly disposed of by our lands finest warriors of the time.

The creatures themselves are known to by heavily dependant on their magical abilities. The origin of this magic however can only be linked to the Void, as it uses life force rather than our arcane fields. This life sapping power is mentioned multiple times in various folklore, usually as part of the build-up to the final battle, the lives of weaken humans being taken before the creatures face the warriors of the land. It is believed that they rely on this to survive in our dimension, as it unknown whether the same ritualistic behaviour is used in their parallel universe.

The secretive nature of their existence was broken roughly 3000 years ago. The place was a recently founded civilisation set up by a squadron of the empires elite. Originally, this was set to be the training place of the emperors finest warriors, but with the discovery of precious ores and gems in the mountains to the west, Axion became a capital of of the region, attracting many a traveller and merchant.

The mountains however held a secret deep within the rocks, home to an outcast Void dweller, who to this day, remains nameless. The Void dweller itself was sealed in a hardened rock, roughly two miles in diameter, and was discovered by a earth-bound mage named Lazario. Although the rock was technically the element he controlled, he couldn't break the rock. It took four mages, of Fire, water, air and earth, to eventually break the seal, but not knowing of what lay inside.

The Void dweller within seemed weak to look at, withered skin, and slumped over the moistened floor. He looked human apart from his crimsoned skin, horns protruding from his face, and claws like machetes. It is known that the four mages approached it, and were leeched to an such an extend, that they became symbiotic to the Void dweller. The rock sealed once more in front of them, and they remained there for seven years.

Once the seven years past, the four mages now had a similar appearance to the Dweller, and emerged from the rock to the surface. Within a matter of days, thousands of lives were taken, and the seemingly unstoppable force made its way to the capital. It was there they were met by warriors, a huge army lead by an archer named Somnium, Lazarios' brother. The battle between the men and the creatures lasted months. As warriors fell, they were replaced with more from the outer lands. The four mages eventually fell on the fourth month, and only the Dweller, Somnium, and a handful of soldiers remained.

As legend tells, Somnium attempted to shoot the Dweller with an arrow, put was sucked into a void portal alongside the Dweller as it dodged the shot. From there, nothing is known. No event of that scale has happened since, and knowledge of the creatures has fated to a select amount of texts. Only the elders of the land hold these books, and a prophecy is said between them.

"They will return, and only the true descendants of Somnium stand a chance."

I actually made all this up, on "Alternate platform of conversation", I have a character based on this, and also is strongly linked with a certain part of our animation community. It lightly touches on actual folklore, regard alternate dimensions and such, but if it fooled you, its gotta be pretty convincing Mooblips

(Just as a sidenote to you in future) Folklore is just an early myth. I had to put folklore as theres a min. character limit on titles.
